Living Well After 50: Why Better Health and Financial Freedom Belong Together

For years, I believed that working harder was the path to building a good life.

As a family physician, I've spent more than 25 years caring for patients, managing a medical practice, and putting in the long hours that so many professionals know all too well.

I loved helping people. I still do.

But somewhere along the way, I realized something important:

Making a living and truly living are not the same thing.

Lisa and I began asking ourselves a different question.

What would life look like if we were healthier, had more control over our time, and could spend more of it doing the things we love?

That question helped shape what we're building here at Living Well With Mike and Lisa.

The Connection Between Health and Freedom

After decades of practicing medicine, one lesson keeps coming back to me: good health is not something we should wait to think about until we're sick.

The everyday choices we make about food, movement, sleep, stress, and preventive care matter. They affect not only how long we live, but how well we can enjoy those years.

But I've also seen another kind of stress affecting people's health: financial pressure.

Worrying about bills, retirement, or whether you can afford to take time off can make it harder to sleep, eat well, and be present with the people you love.

Money isn't everything. But having a financial plan can create breathing room.

That's why I believe health and financial freedom belong in the same conversation.

One helps you feel better and stay capable. The other can give you more choices about how you spend your days.

Together, they make room for a fuller life.

Our Story: From Busy Schedules to More Choices

Like many people, I spent years measuring success by how much I could accomplish in a day.

My work as a physician was meaningful, but the pace could be exhausting.

Eventually, I started learning more about investing, building additional income, and treating our financial future with the same intentionality I encouraged patients to bring to their health.

Over time, those changes gave Lisa and me more flexibility.

We've been able to travel more, spend more time together, and make decisions based less on the demands of a work schedule.

That didn't happen overnight, and it certainly wasn't a straight line.

What changed most was our mindset.

We began building a life around our priorities instead of trying to squeeze our priorities into whatever time was left.

And that's what we want to help others do.

The Three Pillars of Living Well

1. Build Better Health

I'm passionate about helping people understand their bodies and make informed decisions about their health.

We'll talk about practical metabolic health: improving blood sugar and blood pressure, protecting muscle as we age, getting enough protein, moving regularly, sleeping better, and understanding treatment options when lifestyle changes alone aren't enough.

The goal isn't perfection or a particular number on the scale.

It's having the strength, energy, and confidence to enjoy your life.

2. Create More Financial Freedom

You don't have to become a financial expert overnight.

Start by understanding where your money goes, building savings, reducing costly debt, and learning how investing works.

We'll also explore ways to develop additional income using your skills, experience, and knowledge.

I'll share what I've learned about investing and covered calls, including the risks involved. No investment strategy guarantees income or results, and informed decisions matter far more than promises of easy returns.

Financial freedom doesn't have to mean becoming wealthy beyond your wildest dreams.

Sometimes it simply means having enough flexibility to make decisions without constantly worrying about the next paycheck.

3. Live a Life You Love

This is the part that makes the other two worthwhile.

For Lisa and me, it includes travel, family, new experiences, and the freedom to be more present.

Your version may look completely different.

Maybe it's spending more time with grandchildren, starting a business, volunteering, or simply having enough energy to enjoy an ordinary Tuesday.

The point is to be intentional about what matters to you.

Because what good is financial freedom if you don't have the health to enjoy it? And what good is working your entire life if you never have the freedom to live it?

You Don't Have to Change Everything Today

If you're in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, it's easy to feel as though you've missed your opportunity to make a change.

I don't believe that.

Small decisions, repeated consistently, can change the direction of your health and your finances.

You can start with a ten-minute walk, a better breakfast, an honest look at your budget, or one new thing learned about investing.

You don't need a perfect plan to take the first step.

You need a direction—and the willingness to keep moving.
